What is a confined-space breathing air system?
A confined-space breathing-air system supplies suitably controlled respirable air to an approved supplied-air respirator through a purpose-designed air source, treatment and distribution arrangement. Systems may be required during vessel entry, tank maintenance, chemical plant shutdowns, cleaning and other industrial operations, subject to a competent risk assessment.
Important: A high-pressure SCBA or SCUBA cylinder-filling compressor is not automatically a suitable continuous airline respirator air supply. Flow, pressure regulation, compressor type, purification, monitoring, reserve air and compatibility must all be engineered for the specific use.
Common applications
- Industrial tank and vessel cleaning or inspection
- Confined-space maintenance and shutdown work
- Chemical and petrochemical plant operations
- Sewer and wastewater infrastructure maintenance
- Marine, shipyard and enclosed compartment work
- Hazardous-atmosphere work where the selected respiratory protection permits supplied air
What the system may require
- An air source explicitly suitable for respiratory use and sufficient continuous demand
- Appropriate treatment of particles, moisture, oil vapour and other contaminants
- Carbon monoxide assessment or monitoring where the hazard and design require it
- Regulated outlet pressure and flow matched to the respirator manufacturer's specifications
- Approved compatible hoses, connections and air-distribution equipment
- Safe air intake positioning, maintenance, documented air-quality checks and emergency arrangements
Confined-space entry is a separate safety decision
Air supply equipment alone does not make entry safe. Before entry, assess oxygen deficiency or enrichment, toxic or flammable atmospheres, isolation, monitoring, attendant and rescue arrangements. In immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH) atmospheres, a suitable pressure-demand airline respirator with an auxiliary escape air supply or another specifically approved arrangement may be required. Follow applicable South African workplace requirements and the selected respirator manufacturer's instructions.
Air-quality testing and EN 12021
Breathing-air suitability must be demonstrated for the actual air source and use conditions. EN 12021 is a relevant breathing-air specification, but acceptance criteria and monitoring obligations depend on the application, supplier documentation and applicable law. Installing a filter alone does not establish compliance.
Information needed to specify a system
Tell us how many users must breathe simultaneously, their respirator models, hose lengths, work duration, site conditions and air-supply requirements. We also need to understand the available electrical supply, contaminants, duty cycle and whether an emergency reserve or escape arrangement is required.
Frequently asked questions
Can a standard workshop compressor supply confined-space breathing air?
Not without a full design and verification of its suitability, delivered air quality, controls and respirator compatibility. A workshop compressor is not inherently a breathing-air compressor.
Is an SCBA cylinder-filling compressor suitable for a continuous airline?
Not automatically. Cylinder filling and a supplied-air respirator have different pressure, flow and operational requirements.
Do we need a backup air supply?
Emergency or escape-air provisions are determined by the hazard assessment, applicable rules and selected respirator approval; do not assume a single compressor is sufficient.
