Start with the real application
A compressor for filling firefighter SCBA cylinders is not automatically the right system for continuous airline breathing or surface-supplied diving. Identify whether the requirement is high-pressure cylinder charging or low-pressure, continuous breathing-air delivery. These duties have different safety controls, storage arrangements and operating profiles.
Establish cylinder pressure and filling demand
Record each cylinder’s rated working pressure, internal water capacity, number of cylinders filled per shift, and desired turnaround time. A 200/232 bar installation and a 300 bar installation may require different compressor and filling-panel specifications. Never exceed the rating of any cylinder or filling-system component.
Compare delivered air rather than motor size alone
Ask for the manufacturer’s measured free-air delivery at the relevant operating pressure and conditions. Compare practical fill times, duty cycle, cooling provisions, noise, power requirements and service intervals. Supplier brochures are useful starting points, but model-specific performance must be verified.
Treat air purification as a safety-critical subsystem
Moisture removal, filtration, carbon monoxide risk management and independent breathing-air testing all matter. Select purification appropriate to the inlet conditions and intended breathing-air specification, and follow documented sampling, maintenance and changeout procedures.
Consider site conditions in South Africa
Check whether the site provides the required single- or three-phase electricity; note altitude, ambient temperature, ventilation, inlet placement and secure cylinder handling. If remote operation is required, consider a manufacturer-approved petrol or diesel-driven configuration and manage exhaust-gas contamination.
Ask for lifetime support
Confirm spare filters, compressor lubricant, service kits, maintenance capability, product manuals, training, documented commissioning and realistic parts lead times. A lower initial price can be outweighed by downtime or unavailable consumables.
Frequently asked questions
Is a 300 bar compressor suitable for every SCBA cylinder?
No. The cylinder, valve, hose, manifold and filling controls must all be rated and approved for the intended service and pressure.
Can I use an ordinary workshop compressor for breathing air?
No. A general-purpose compressor does not establish breathable air quality or suitability for respiratory protection.
What should I send with a quotation request?
Send the application, cylinder pressure and capacity, number of daily fills, available power, site location and any applicable air-quality specification.
