Safety note: This educational guide is not an operating procedure or certification. Always use the equipment manufacturer’s instructions, applicable standards and competent technical advice.

What a filling station contains

A typical high-pressure SCBA cylinder filling installation may include a breathing-air compressor, filtration and purification system, approved filling panel, pressure-rated hoses and connections, storage/cascade cylinders where appropriate and an arrangement for safely restraining cylinders during filling.

Specify operating pressure and volume

Fire departments should document cylinder models, rated pressures, cylinder counts, peak recharge demand and the number of simultaneous filling points required. These details determine capacity and the suitability of storage banks; they cannot be inferred from station size alone.

Air quality cannot be assumed

The compressor and purification package should be evaluated against the breathing-air specification required by the equipment manufacturer and relevant local authority. EN 12021 may be referenced in technical specifications, but a claim of conformity requires appropriate controls and test evidence.

Pay attention to compressor intake location

Locate the intake away from vehicle exhaust, fuel vapours, smoke and other contaminants. In engine-driven installations, exhaust segregation is essential. Continuous monitoring or periodic testing may be required by site-specific risk assessment and applicable requirements.

Commissioning and ongoing records

Maintain commissioning records, operator training, filtration change records, quality tests, compressor service history and cylinder inspection/recertification records where applicable. Adopt the relevant pressure-equipment and breathing-apparatus manufacturer requirements.

A practical RFQ checklist

Include whether the unit is fixed or mobile, whether electrical power is available, SCBA cylinder types, duty cycle, required filling time, delivery address and requested accessories. Ask the supplier to detail exclusions such as installation works and independent air testing.

Frequently asked questions

What does SCBA mean?

Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus, commonly used in firefighting and emergency response.

Do fire brigades need 300 bar systems?

Not always. Match the actual cylinder fleet and equipment manufacturer specifications rather than assuming one universal pressure.

Are cascade cylinders always necessary?

No. Storage banks may improve peak filling capacity, but suitability depends on demand, layout and operating procedures.
