Safety note: This educational guide is not an operating procedure or certification. Always use the equipment manufacturer’s instructions, applicable standards and competent technical advice.

Match the compressor to the diving operation

A dive school filling a handful of recreational cylinders has different capacity requirements from a commercial dive operator serving several teams per day. Establish cylinders per day, working pressure, cylinder type, site infrastructure and operational schedule.

Pressure and cylinder compatibility

Common cylinder services may involve 200/232 bar or 300 bar systems, but never determine fill pressure from a marketing label alone. Follow the cylinder marking, valve specification, applicable procedures and fill-panel limits.

Air quality is mission-critical

Diving breathing gas must meet the required quality specifications and be checked using suitable methods. The compressor inlet location, filtration, moisture removal, maintenance and test frequency should be documented, not assumed from a filter cartridge label.

Electric and engine-driven options

Electric compressors can suit workshops and dive centres with dependable electrical supply. Engine-driven units offer mobility but need careful positioning of combustion exhaust relative to air intakes and operators.

Why cooling and duty cycle matter

Excessive thermal loading can affect lubricant life, filtration and equipment reliability. Compare actual permitted run times, ambient conditions and the manufacturer’s cooling requirements. Allow proper temperature management during cylinder filling.

Document the filling procedure

Train staff on inspections, filling rate limits, hose and cylinder compatibility, compressor checks and recording. Have a clear procedure for rejecting damaged or out-of-test cylinders and for escalating suspect air-quality results.

Frequently asked questions

Can SCUBA and SCBA cylinders use the same compressor?

Potentially, only if the complete system, gas quality, connectors, pressure ratings and procedures suit both applications. Never assume interchangeability.

What is free-air delivery?

A measure of usable compressor air output under specified conditions; it helps estimate fill time when compared consistently.

Can a small portable unit supply divers underwater?

A high-pressure cylinder-filling unit is not automatically designed or approved for continuous surface-supplied diving.
